Straight teeth linked to good impressions

Survey Results Indicate People with Straight Teeth Appear Happier and Smarter

It’s no secret that straight teeth and a bright smile can do wonders for your self-confidence, but can they influence how others see you? According to results of a recent survey, the answer is yes. The survey found individuals with straight teeth were seen in a more positive light than those with crooked teeth, appearing happier, more successful and smarter. Here, North Dallas dentist Dr. Darian Hampton breaks down the findings.

What the Study Found

The survey, conducted by marketing group Kelton Research, contrasted photos of men and women with straight teeth and those with misaligned teeth. The survey asked 1,047 Americans to give their opinion about people in the images. Results of the survey indicated that people with straight teeth were perceived to have more desirable qualities than those with crooked teeth, including:

Successful. People with straight teeth were seen as 58 percent more likely to be successful, as well as 58 percent more likely to be wealthy.

Dating Material. People with straight teeth were perceived as 57 percent more likely than those with crooked teeth to get a date based on their picture alone. Nearly 38 percent of those surveyed said they would consider avoiding a date with someone who has misaligned teeth.

Healthy and Happy. People with straight teeth were 21 percent more likely to be viewed as happy, 47 percent more likely to be seen as being healthy and 38 percent more likely to be perceived as smart.

Trustworthy. The study found 73 percent of the people surveyed would be more likely to trust someone with a nice, attractive smile than someone with a good job, outfit or car.
