If you are like many people, you have already made a few New Year’s resolutions to improve your health. North Dallas dentist Dr. Darian Hampton of Hamptons Dental would like to encourage you to take a few a steps to improve your oral health. Here are a few simple resolutions you can make that are guaranteed to keep your smile bright and healthy all year long.
Brush and Floss Twice a Day
Brushing and flossing at least twice a day (or after every meal) are essential in keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Brushing removes plaque, a film-like coating that forms on your teeth, which can eventually lead to cavities and gum disease. Make it a habit to brush for at least two minutes twice a day.
Chew Sugarless Gum
Research shows chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes following meals can help prevent cavities and tooth decay. Look for gum that contains several therapeutic agents that aid in saliva production and help prevent plaque buildup and tooth decay. Remember that chewing gum does not replace regular brushing and flossing.
Drink Fluoridated Water
Fluoride is key to preventing and reversing tooth decay. Fluoride repairs and re-mineralizes tooth enamel, which is the hard substance on the outer layer of the teeth. When purchasing bottled water, look for brands that contain fluoride. The American Dentistry Association recommends using fluoride toothpaste and mouth rinses at home. Dr. Hampton also offers patients fluoride treatments in his North Dallas dental office.
Visit Your Dentist Twice a Year
Regular dental visits can help detect dental problems and fix them before they become serious issues. Keep your smile and teeth in top-notch form by visiting the dentist every six months. During this time, your dentist can also perform regular cleaning to remove dental plaque and stains that you are unable to remove yourself.
Seek Professional Help
While taking these simple, everyday steps can keep your smile healthy and strong, it can’t fix all dental problems. Do you constantly find yourself hiding your smile because it’s crooked or uneven? Are you embarrassed by yellowed, discolored teeth? If any of this sounds familiar, Dr. Darian Hampton can help. He offers a range of general and cosmetic dentistry treatments including teeth whitening, ceramic crowns and dental implants to help brighten or restore your smile.
