Cosmetic Resin Bonding

Serving patients in Plano, Farmers Branch, North Dallas & Carrollton

Darian Hampton, DDS, a well-renowned dentist in North Dallas, can help restore your smile so that it is as dazzling as you are. He offers many Carrollton cosmetic dentistry options to improve less-than-perfect smiles, including resin bonding whether you want to change the shape of your teeth; or protect sensitive teeth, cosmetic resin bonding may be the answer.

What Is Resin Bonding?

Cosmetic resin bonding is an easy and relatively inexpensive way to improve your smile. Dr. Hampton performs dental bonding by applying tooth-colored resin, a type of plastic that bonds to the teeth. Dr. Hampton can shape and polish resin to match the adjacent teeth.

He performs dental bonding to repair decaying, cracked, chipped, sensitive or stained teeth. He can also bond teeth to close gaps between them or to make them appear longer. For patients with a receding gum line, Dr. Hampton may recommend bonding as a way to protect a tooth’s exposed root. In certain circumstances, he may also advise bonding as a cosmetic alternative to an unsightly amalgam, or metal alloy, dental filling.

Dental bonding differs from veneers treatment in that Dr. Hampton can bond a tooth in a single visit. In contrast, with veneers, Dr. Hampton must take a customized impression of the teeth and then send it off to the lab so that a lab technician can manufacture veneers that match your existing teeth. Preparing, manufacturing and fitting veneers usually takes multiple visits to The Hamptons Family & Cosmetic Dentistry office.

What to Expect During Bonding Treatment

Unlike with dental implants or veneers, Dr. Hampton does not require a separate office visit to prepare teeth for dental bonding. Also, he does not usually need to use anesthesia, unless he is performing dental bonding to fill a decayed tooth.

Before applying the resin to the teeth, Dr. Hampton chooses a resin color that closely matches your existing teeth. Some patients choose to undergo teeth whitening treatments before dental bonding. Once he is satisfied with the resin shade, he lightly roughens the surface of your tooth. He then coats the tooth with a liquid that helps the resin bond to it.

Once the North Dallas cosmetic dentistry provider is satisfied that the tooth is properly prepared, he applies the tooth-colored bonding material. He next molds the resin into the desired shape, smoothing the surface along the way. Dr. Hampton then uses an ultraviolet light or laser to harden the resin material. Once it has hardened, the skillful cosmetic dentist further shapes and trims the resin. Finally, he polishes the bonded material so that it matches your existing teeth.

Resin bonding treatment for one tooth takes about an hour. Several office visits may be needed if you plan to have more than one tooth bonded.

In the first 48 hours following dental bonding treatment, you should avoid drinking liquids or eating foods that stain teeth, as these can cause permanent stains.

Things to Keep in Mind About Tooth Bonding

As natural as dental bonding looks, the resin bonding material is not quite as strong as your natural teeth. Therefore, you should avoid actions that may chip or damage the resin, such as chewing on ice or pens, biting your fingernails, or opening containers with your teeth (which you should never do anyway). Dental bonding can last numerous years before needing repairs. You can ensure an optimum lifespan of dental bonds by practicing good oral hygiene, visiting The Hamptons Family & Cosmetic Dentistry for annual checkups and cleanings, and avoiding too much tea, coffee, red wine, cigarette smoke and other substances that stain teeth.

Be sure to contact Dr. Hampton if you develop an unusual bite following bonding treatment or notice sharp edges on the bonded teeth. Additionally, be sure to contact Dr. Hampton if the bonding material chips or falls out.

After bonding, your teeth will be stronger, your smile can be brighter and your confidence level will soar. You can have the smile that you have always wanted in less time than you imagined.
