Are You Brushing This Commonly Missed Spot?

Regular visits to your dentist are essential, but good oral hygiene starts at home. Brushing twice a day helps you maintain healthy teeth and gums that will really give you something to smile about. In this blog post, North Dallas cosmetic dentistry specialist, Dr. Darian Hampton, discusses proper brushing techniques to ensure you reach even the most commonly missed spots.

Inside Surfaces

It’s easy to remember to brush the outside surfaces of your teeth, because those are the parts of your pearly whites you see in the mirror. People rarely forget to clean the chewing surfaces, as they get the most wear and tear. However, many people miss the inside surfaces of their teeth, neglecting to brush the areas that face the tongue and palate. Plaque and gum disease are just as much of a problem on the hidden portion of your teeth as they are on the more visible areas.

Proper Brushing Technique

Even if you brush your teeth twice a day like clockwork, if you approach the process the wrong way, you could deny your mouth the full benefits of your oral care routine. The ADA recommends implementing the following techniques when you brush your teeth:

  • Your toothbrush should be at a 45-degree angle to your gums
  • Brush with gentle, short strokes
  • Be sure to brush outer, inner and chewing surfaces of teeth
  • Brush for at least two minutes total
  • Floss your teeth at least once a day

Other Tips for Healthy Teeth

Brushing your teeth with an ADA-approved fluoride toothpaste will boost the cavity fighting power of your dental care routine. Be sure to replace your toothbrush as soon as the bristles are frayed, or every three months, whichever comes first. Worn out bristles will not be able to clean your teeth effectively. Also make sure your toothbrush is the right size for your mouth; it needs to fit comfortably in the space between your teeth and cheek in order to reach your back molars. A soft-bristled brush used twice a day will help prevent plaque buildup while not irritating your gums.

Along with proper home care, good oral hygiene requires regular dental checkups. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Darian Hampton, call The Hamptons Family and Cosmetic Dentistry at (972) 395-9292.
