Back-to-School Dental Tips

Back-to-School Dental Tips

In the hustle and bustle of getting your children back to school, don’t forget about their oral health. By making sure they start the year off with healthy and strong teeth and gums, you’ll be setting them up for success. Dr. Darian Hampton, an expert in cosmetic dentistry in the North Dallas area, shares his best back-to-school dental tips here.

Turn Brushing and Flossing into a Fun Activity

Take the time to instill and encourage good oral hygiene habits. Daily brushing and flossing are critical to preventing cavities, gum disease, bad breath and other problems that can cause pain and require taking time off from school or sports to treat.

Kids might need a little extra motivation or encouragement to brush and floss consistently. Make brushing and flossing a fun activity by playing your child’s favorite song as they brush and floss, or download one of the smartphone apps Dr. Hampton mentioned in this post.

Pack Healthy Lunches

As you pack your children’s lunch and snacks, include plenty of dairy options like milk, yogurt and cheese, which are full of calcium for strong teeth. Crunchy fruits and vegetables like carrots, apples and celery are great because they naturally clean the teeth. Instead of chips and crackers, throw in a handful of almonds. Swap out soda for a small box of unsweetened fruit juice or a bottle of water. Save candy and desserts for a special occasion.

Have Your Child Fitted for a Mouth Guard

If your children play a contact sport, they should be fitted for custom mouth guards. Custom-fitted mouth guards are more comfortable and effective than boil-and-bite or stock mouth guards that are sold in sporting goods stores. Mouth guards are also recommended for children that grind or clench their teeth at night.

Look into Orthodontic Options

Middle schoolers or high schoolers that feel self-conscious of gapped, crooked or crowded teeth may be interested in fixing these teeth before prom or senior pictures. Dr. Hampton would be happy to evaluate your child for orthodontic treatment in North Dallas and explain the available options.

Accidents and emergencies can happen at any time. Make sure you have our office phone number easily accessible, which will come in handy unforeseen accidents such as a knocked-out tooth, laceration or other dental emergency. We are always just a phone call away when you need us! You might want to stick one of our cards in your children’s backpacks in case something happens at school.
